These vegetables should not be missing on any winter menu and are a pleasure to eat raw. Beets are easy to grow and suitable for almost any soil that has not been freshly fertilised. Sow the beets in rows and separate them when the second leaf appears. When harvesting, twist the leaves, being careful not to injure the tubers. When the leaves turn brown, it's time to harvest.

Our tip:

• Only sow the beets on the same area after three to four years have passed. Be careful not to plant them together with chard or spinach.
