3 Tips for the Perfect Picnic

3 Tips for the Perfect Picnic

Here at FromAustria, you will find a variety of products that are perfect for a snack in the great outdoors and also all the necessary accessories such as lunch boxes by Alpin Loacker, water bottles or the practical cooler bag by Almdudler.

First off, find a suitable place. The ground should be reasonably level and with accessible shade. It should be quiet enough that you can relax and unwind. Sitting too close to a children's play area where children are running and playing, for example, is best avoided. Checking the weather forecast beforehand doesn't hurt either!

Our tips for the perfect picnic:

1. Cool drinks

Don't forget the drinks! Often while packing for a picnic we're so focused on the food that we forget to pack drinks - absolutely essential for a refreshing and relaxing time. With a cooler bag, you can keep your drinks cool for a few hours. In our drinks category, you will find many summery and fruity drinks to complement your picnic snacks - both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.

2. Salads in a container

You can take a wide variety of salads with you in a container with an airtight lid. With a base of legumes, such as beans or chickpeas or millet or couscous, it can be really filling. Start layering the ingredients with the heaviest on the bottom, such as the beans or the cooked millet. Then add various other ingredients such as vegetables - radishes, peppers or a sliced apple. Green salads such as lettuce or spinach and finally nuts and raisins go on top. The choices are limitless! You can pack the salad dressing in a separate container and add it to your salad just before you eat.

3. Pestos & spreads

Dips are another favourite to take along on picnics to be eaten with some bread or crackers. Pestos not only refine pasta dishes, but they also taste delicious in salads, go perfectly with cheese and are suitable as a spread or dip.

Select from a delicious range in our Pestos & Spreads category. But if you have time to make something yourself, here is a recipe to make the classic Austrian Liptauer Cheese Spread.

Classic Liptauer

  • 100 g butter at room temperature
  • 250 g cottage cheese
  • Pickled cucumbers - very finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 1 tbsp sweet or spicy paprika powder, depending on taste
  • Some caraway seeds - chopped
  • Garlic
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Some chives - chopped

Whip the butter with a whisk until it's smooth. Mix in the ricotta cheese and stir in the remaining ingredients. Check for seasoning - done!

The Liptauer goes perfectly with the classic Austrian bread, the Kornspitz.
